This article deals with reducing the energy consumption of surface soil tillage with heavy combined tilling units. The main disadvantage of the combined tillage unit (AKP-6) has been identified. Excessively high mass and draft resistance lead to excessive soil compaction and high operational costs. Based on the analysis of modern analogues, such as Farmet Verso and Vaderstad NZ Aggressive cultivators, the AKP-6 combined unit was modernized by replacing the disc looseners with a set of spring tine levellers and eliminating the packing rollers. The design of the proposed spring tine leveller was described with a strength calculation based on the finite element method in the APM FEM. According to the results of the finite element strength calculations, the reliability of the proposed design was confirmed, since the maximum stresses obtained as a result of the calculations, equal to 152.8 MPa, and deformations, equal to 23.67 mm, are within the permissible limits, and the minimum yield safety factor is 6.99. Simulation approved the effectiveness of the oscillatory process of soil fragmentation. As a result of the modernization, a significant decrease in draft resistance is expected, which could allow the AKP-6M unit to be mounted to a 270 hp tractor instead of 300-350 hp tractors. This could reduce fuel consumption and total operational costs with high quality of surface soil tillage. A comparative assessment showed that the modernization of the AKP-6 unit allows reducing specific fuel consumption by 12.6% and specific operational costs by 13.3%, with a slight decrease in productivity.
